The Sopwith Pup for sale by the Sopwith Aviation Aviation Company was officially named Scout. There are different versions of how the aircraft got its name:

(1) The name Pup became synonymous with the aircraft because pilots considered it a smaller sibling to its predecessor.

(2 ) Sopwith originally designated their new aircraft the Admiralty Type 9901. They retained the interplane struts of their predecessor, but due to the wings of the aircraft being about one fifth smaller than those of its predecessor, the aircraft was eventually renamed the Pup.

A Sopwith Pup was the first aircraft ever to land on a moving ship. This was on August 2, 1917 when the aircraft piloted by Edwin Dunning landed on the HMS Furious. RNAS Sopwith Pup aircraft pioneered the use of aircraft from Royal Navy ships.

The English made Sopwith Pup was able to counter the formidable German fighter aircraft, and return the balance of power between the Axis countries and Allies.

Pups were deployed in 1916 with the Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Flying Corps Service. They soon became an all time pilot favorite. They were praised for their ease of handling, maneuverability, speed, and excellent high altitude performance. In their first two months of service the aircraft were credited with the downing of 20 enemy aircraft, without a single loss of their own.

The standard aircraft engine was a 80 h.p. Le Rhone rotary. Some aircraft assigned to the defense of Great Britain were equipped with the more powerful 100 h.p. Gnome Monosoupape rotary engines for greater performance.

Over 1,770 Sopwith Pup fighters were sold prior to the end of the war.

Al reports his rc Sopwith Pup as flying great. It looks great and flies well at scale speeds, but has plenty of reserve power. He particularly appreciates the looks of his rc airplane when it is overhead and the sun shines through the wing covering. It does great aerobatics without being twitchy to fly.
